PRISM is an IDEAlliance Specification of IDEAlliance that defines an XML metadata vocabulary for managing, post-processing, multi-purposing and aggregating publishing content for magazine and journal publishing.  The PRISM Working Group initiated its work in 1999, released PRISM 1.0 in 2001 and addressed publishing across media platforms by releasing PRISM 2.0 in 2008

PRISM FAQs Posted

During the summer, the PRISM Working Group developed a set of Frequently Asked Questions as part of their ongoing educational mission. Paul Lopez, consultant and co-chair of the PRISM Working Group headed up this effort. The FAQs provide the “who”, “what”, “when”, and “how” of the PRISM metadata specification. This effort was in response to the many questions from the public about when it is appropriate to use PRISM as a starting point for content management and aggregation and how to get started. The FAQs are available in an XHTML version online at http://www.prismstandard.org/faq/. A printer-friendly PDF version is also available. A new LinkedIn Group http://www.linkedin.com/, PRISM Practitioners, was established to answer further questions and to provide peer support for those implementing the specification.

PRISM to Launch Metadata for Digital Images Effort

In 2005, a subcommittee of PRISM began to develop a new metadata specification for digital images called Digital Image Management Metadata or DIM2. This work aggressively tackled topics such a delivery platforms and digital rights that really justified their own place in the PRISM Specification. In early 2007, work on the digital image metadata specification was set aside and concepts from that early work were brought back to the broader PRISM Working Group for inclusion in the general specification. Based on this input, the PRISM Working Group released PRISM 2.0, addressing content delivery in an online and multimedia environment, as well as in print in 2008. Then in 2009, PRISM 2.1 adding metadata to manage and track rights and permissions for all types of digital media, including digital images was released. Now PRISM is launching an effort to develop a metadata specification for digital images that uses PRISM metadata fields as its basis and develops metadata fields that are unique to the encoding of digital images where required. If you are interested in participating in this effort, contact Dianne Kennedy.

PRISM (Publishing Requirements for Industry Standard Metadata), an IDEAlliance Working Group, today announces the availability of PRISM 2.1 Errata. The Errata specifies a standard URL for the PRISM DTDs and XSDs.
